The old peoples of East Asia divided the sky into four and set a sacred beast over each direction to guard the world. These Four Guardians were a symbol old and deep enough to be vividly painted on the murals of Goguryeo's Gangseo Great Tomb. Spanning direction, season, and even color, these four beasts formed one order for reading the world.
Azure Dragon of the East, White Tiger of the West
The Azure Dragon guarding the east is a blue dragon holding the energy of spring and wood, symbolizing generation and ascent. The White Tiger of the west is a white tiger with the energy of autumn and metal, meaning valor, decision, and defense. The force that rises and the force that cuts find balance in east and west.
Vermilion Bird of the South, Black Tortoise of the North
The Vermilion Bird of the south is a red phoenix with the energy of summer and fire, symbolizing splendor, passion, and good fortune. The Black Tortoise of the north, a form of tortoise and snake entwined, holds the energy of winter and water, meaning wisdom, patience, and deep defense. The blaze and the sinking stand facing each other in south and north.
The harmony the four beasts make
