Past Life Story

In the 21st year of King Yeongjo, you were born into a yangban family in Bukchon, Hanyang. The clan was prestigious among the Noron faction, yet had withdrawn from political turmoil to devote themselves to scholarship. Your father served as Jeongeon at the Saganwon, and your mother was a lawful wife who could read and write—a rarity among women of that age. By three, you had mastered the Thousand Character Classic. By seven, you had memorized the Four Books. While other children chased through alleys, you sat on the wooden floor of the sarangchae, opening volumes far too heavy for your small hands. Loneliness visited you sometimes, but Confucius, Mencius, and Zhu Xi—those you met within the pages—became your companions. Their teachings became the bones of who you were. At fifteen, you passed the local examination. At twenty, you cleared the Jinsa-si. All urged you toward the great civil examination, but your heart was not in the noisy power struggles of Hanyang. The Joseon you saw was deeply troubled—endless factional strife, withering livelihoods of the common people. How could a single line of writing save such an age? That question became the koan of your life. At twenty-five, you left Hanyang for your hometown of Andong. There you opened a small seodang and accepted children from poor households. Scholarship belonged not to yangban alone—this was your conviction. People mocked you. "A son of nobility teaching the children of commoners?" pointed fingers and whispers. But you did not waver. Years later, when a farmer's son who had learned at your seodang passed the Jinsa examination, you finally smiled. In your thirties, you began writing a book—your own interpretation of the li-qi theory of Neo-Confucianism. Ten years of contemplation distilled into a single volume. The book received little attention in your lifetime. But a hundred years after your death, a scholar discovered it, and your name was finally passed to posterity. You never married. Some said you were possessed by scholarship. Others whispered that you had loved one woman whose status forbade union, and so you renounced. Only you knew the truth. But on a corner of your writing desk, a single dried plum blossom always rested. In the autumn of your forty-fifth year, you delivered your final lecture before your students. "Scholarship has no end. To pursue it is a lifelong path. Yet that very pursuit—that itself is scholarship." Those were your last words. Your students inscribed them upon their hearts and never forgot. That night, as always, you read in the sarangchae, then extinguished the lamp and slept. You did not wake again. When your students found you, your hand still rested on an open copy of the Great Learning. On its final page, in your small handwriting, was a single line: "Today, one more step." When the king heard of your death, he ordered an annal-keeper to investigate your legacy. Arriving in Andong, the official found two hundred students gathered in mourning. Three of them would later become Daejehak. Their disciples, in turn, would lead the scholarship of another age. You walked a lonely path, yet you were not alone. After you departed, your teachings flowed like a stream through time. You did not merely teach an era—you became a lamp of learning that flowed across ages. That lamp may still glow somewhere, on someone's desk, quietly, even now.
