In the 21st year of King Yeongjo, you were born into a yangban family in Bukchon, Hanyang. The clan was prestigious among the Noron faction, yet had withdrawn from political turmoil to devote themselves to scholarship. Your father served as Jeongeon at the Saganwon, and your mother was a lawful wife who could read and write—a rarity among women of that age. By three, you had mastered the Thousand Character Classic. By seven, you had memorized the Four Books. While other children chased through alleys, you sat on the wooden floor of the sarangchae, opening volumes far too heavy for your small hands. Loneliness visited you sometimes, but Confucius, Mencius, and Zhu Xi—those you met within the pages—became your companions. Their teachings became the bones of who you were. At fifteen, you passed the local examination. At twenty, you cleared the Jinsa-si. All urged you toward the great civil examination, but your heart was not in the noisy power struggles of Hanyang.
